Book Review - Afloat

Eagle's Talon is an architectural marvel-shining residential units afloat in a protected cove of the gorgeous Rondeau River. The project is nearly complete, partially occupied, and ready to make investors rich when a sinkhole gives way. Then torrential rains and a flood leave a ragged collection of builders, investors, and residents stranded in one floating building, cut off from the rest of the world.

They're bitterly divided over what to do next.
Architect Vance Nolan insists they should sit tight and wait for rescue. Developer Tony Dean wants to strike out into the darkness. And single mom Danielle Clement, desperate to protect her young son, Simeon, struggles to hold their motley band together.

Power failure, a pall of unnatural daytime darkness, explosions in the distance, then a murder ratchet tensions to a boiling point. But Danielle's young son, Simeon, has spotted something strange underwater-beautiful, shifting lights in the dark water below.
In this watery world where everyone's secrets will eventually come to light, salvation may mean more than just getting out alive.

Another stunning exploration of the human spirit and supernatural possibilities from best-selling author Erin Healy.

This was one of the most unusual books that I've read in a long time! The plot kept me guessing the whole time and it was a definite page turner!

Danielle is a single mother whose husband has died and she feels great responsibility to provide for her son. She takes a job with a man, Tony, who provides her with a home in an exclusive area that he owns if she will "talk the place up" when prospective buyers come by.  Their relationship goes from business to personal, even though she has reservations about it because she doesn't love him.

Vance is a man who has overcome a difficult past. He's done it with the help of the Lord and he tries to live his life for the Lord. His mentor, Zeke, is a modern day prophet who sees the impending disaster about to come down upon this exclusive area on the bay where Vance works and Danielle lives.

I really liked how the author showed how God works behind the scenes, using His angels and his creation, to guide us and help us in our time of trouble. The character of Ranier Smith was especially intriguing and you knew that He was sent by God to help and warn people. He was an interesting character who shows up throughout the pages.

I thought it was especially interesting how the women characters were women who thought they could handle things in their own strength, yet when it came down to it, they realized that they really couldn't. I expected this story to have more characters "coming to the Lord" but it wasn't that way at all and I also thought that made it unusual for a Christian book. The important thing is not really that the characters come to this realization, but that the reader does, and I think this book does that brilliantly. We see the fallacies of trying to do it alone as we go through this story.

I wasn't prepared for the ending and the revelation of who created part of the disaster. I also wasn't prepared for the redemption and restoration that happens. It was a lovely ending to an intriguing book! I highly recommend this book! It's unusual, intriguing and mysterious all rolled up in one - with a beautiful message hidden between the lines.
