I could barely put this book down! I loved the story, the fact that you never quite knew what was goingn to happen next and the complexity of the characters.
Rhoda is a young Amish woman who is treated with disdain by her community. She has a gift that other's don't understand and, instead of trying to get to know her better, they judge her and treat her as if she's something evil. She is tormented by one man in particular who makes it his mission to destroy the one thing she enjoys in her life - her garden.
On another Amish farm, Samuel is the caretaker of his families orchard. It's a huge orchard with a great reputation. Unfortunately, Samuel finds that his brother has not taken as good of care of his acres of the orchard as he should have. He struggles to find a way to make the apples still make money for his family.
Through unusual circumstances, Samuel meets Rhoda and understands immediately her gift for tending her garden. He also is impressed with her sucessful business that sells her canned berries to stores. He realizes that Rhoda may be the answer to his apple orchard dilemma.
Throw in Samuel's jealous and needy girlfriend, his brother, Jacob's growing affection for Rhoda, and you have quite a story of twists and turns! I honestly can't wait for the second book in this series to come out so I can find out what happens with everyone.
Cindy Woodsmall's writing draws you in, explains the Amish ways by making them part of the story, and makes you care for the characters as if you know them personally.
I highly recommend this book. It's enjoyable and an excellent read!
