Sunday Thoughts

As I'm studying my Bible each day, I'm keeping my mind and heart aware of the Scriptures that help me in my word of the year - RENEW.  I have felt a huge calling on my Spirit from God to renew so many areas of my life that have been neglected, or even destroyed, through the past years of battling health issues. Of course, all Scripture is vital and I apply all of it to my life, but I'm keenly aware of those things I feel God is showing me to help me RENEW my life.

I was studying Ephesians 4:1-7 and there is so much there to direct us in our lives! Here is the Scriptures in my Bible (click on the picture to make it larger for reading)

This passage tells us to live worthy and then gives the qualities we need to pursue.  These qualities are:
  • Humility
  • Gentleness
  • Patience
  • Tolerance
  • Peaceful
  • Hopeful
What I love is that in verse 7, God tells us that we don't have to try and do this on our own! We have the grace of Jesus to help us in our pursuit to live worthy.  He gives us the measure of grace we need to live our lives in a way that glorifies Him.

When I read this, I realized that these are the exact qualities I need to help me RENEW my life. These are the things that are vital to a life well lived - a life worthy of the One who died for me! To live with all these attributes makes life so much better.

I made these notes to remind myself of how these will work to help me in my longing to make areas of my life better

Here's my notes to myself about what I learned:
  • To live in a way that will glorify God, these are the attributes I need to pursue and live out
  • To renew relationships, these are the qualities that show love to others
  • To renew areas of my life that are dry as dust, these are the attributes that will breath new life into those areas.
  • All through the grace of Jesus!
I love how God gives us so much through His Word! He knows what we need to help us in our lives and that's why it's so vital to get in our Bibles every day. There is so much help to us as we go through our days. No matter what we are going through, God is there for us and He gives us reminders of His love, grace, and guidance through our Bible reading.

You can read this passage of Scripture online at Bible Gateway HERE

Thank you for coming by and reading all about what God is showing me! I hope it encouraged you today.

My Quiet Time Book Stack

I thought I would share with you the books I will have in my quiet time stack this year. I may add to it as the year goes on, but this is what I have right now. (Mitzi is actually quite excited about my choices! 😉)

This is my She Reads Truth Bible and my KeyWord Bible.

The She Reads Truth is the blue leather-bound edition as I find it so much easier to hold than the hard back edition.  As I get older and my arthritis gets worse, I try to find ways to make it easier on myself as I do things.

I like this Bible because it has large margins where I can write my notes or prayers as I read through the Scriptures. I also really like the Christian Standard Bible (CSB) edition as I find it easy to read yet true to the original Greek and Hebrew.

The Key Word Study Bible is great for truly understanding what I'm reading. It explains the meanings of the Greek and Hebrew words so that I can understand the context of the Scripture. I really like this Bible because it helps me to dig deeper into the Word.

Next is my Drawing Near Everyday Devotional Bible by John MacArthur

I love this Bible because it takes part of the Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms and Proverbs and gives me a little bit to read each day. This allows me to read the Bible through the year in one year.

My next book is a devotional journal that I received for review about a month ago. I just love it and decided to work through it each day this year. It has a wonderful devotion and a huge section for writing. It's a wonderful devotional/journal.

The Give Me Jesus journal is wonderful for keeping your thoughts on your daily Scripture reading, your prayers, a gratitude area, and more. It's a lovely book and will become a keepsake! I love how it encourages me to write down what I've learned.

The next two books go together. One is a book and one a study by Lysa Turkeurst.

I'm excited about this book and study as I know it's going to be inspiring and help me to understand why things happen in a way that we don't think it should. I've been hearing about Lysa's story this past year and I'm anxious to learn what she learned and how she stayed strong in her faith despite what was going on around her. I also have the DVD so I can do the study with all the information.

This is my gratitude journal. I've had this for a couple years and was consistent in writing down my blessings each day but then fell away from it. I'm making a commitment this year to write in it every day. It's such a great encouragement to write down the blessings of my day each day.

Finally, this is my Praying with Jane devotion. I read through this last year when I reviewed it but enjoyed it so much, I wanted to make it a part of my quiet time again. If you haven't checked this book out, be sure you do, especially if you're a Jane Austen fan. It will speak to your heart!

I hope you enjoyed seeing my book stack for my quiet time. I'm sure I'll add different things as the year goes on, but this is my beginning stack.  In case you're interested, I have added the affiliate links to all these books at the end of this post.

I have some other things I'm going to be working on as well, including my Illustrating Bible and my 100 days of grace book. I haven't done anything in them yet but, when I do, I'll share!

Free Bible Study - Before I Go; Jesus' Final Teaching and Prayer

ABOUT THE STUDY:

If you have ever wondered who Jesus Christ REALLY is or questioned His relevance in your life, I invite you to join us for the “Before I Go” study. All you need to complete this free online Bible study is 15-minutes per day and an e-mail address.

Jesus Christ stepped away from the crowds to spend His final moments with friends.

He knew His hour had come—His time on earth was short—so He did what any good leader would do: He offered tender instruction to His disciples, assured them of His love, and gave them one final assignment.

This detailed account of Jesus' final words and actions in John 14-17 helps us see Jesus Christ for who He really is.
.
These words, penned by one of Jesus’ dearest friends, reveal the heart of the Man, the Messiah, and the Redeemer. They are the gospel truth that brings freedom, joy, and transformation into our lives.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Sarah Koontz invites Christians of all ages to explore the beauty of God’s design through her writing at LivingbyDesign.org. She is a passionate storyteller who enjoys using illustrations to communicate deep spiritual truths. Before I Go is Sarah’s fifth free online Bible study, and she hopes to write many more in the years to come.

Sarah and her husband, Ryan, recently established a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to support this ministry and invite you to partner with them in their mission to “Feed God’s Sheep.” Every $1 donated to our ministry helps 5 people receive free Bible study material in their inbox.

By continuing to provide our Bible-centered resources free of charge, we are able to overcome many barriers and reach women around the globe with the spiritual nourishment they crave.

Sarah and Ryan live on thirteen acres in the heart of the Black Hills, SD. They have two beautiful daughters, Anya (10) and Nadia (9), a rowdy flock of chickens, and two cats. Sarah is an avid gardener, a faithful coffee drinker, lover of one-pot-dinners, and an unexpected homeschooler. When she’s not covered in dirt or caring for her family, Sarah loves to spend her weekends reading Historical Fiction and listening to Norah Jones on Pandora radio.

MY REVIEW:

I have been so incredibly blessed to be on the launch team for Sarah Koontz's other Bible studies and was so excited when she announced this new study. It's absolutely amazing, as all her studies are, and I love that this one focuses on the final teaching and prayer of Jesus.

The study only takes about 15 minutes to do each day yet it gets deeply into the Word of God. I was amazed at how much I've learned while studying these chapters of John. I've read John many times, but Sarah pulls so much from the Scripture and I feel like I have a much deeper understanding of the words of Jesus.

Every day there is a focus word and I loved that they are verbs. Action words are so helpful to me as I go forth in my day trying to live my life as Jesus would. I would think about each word as I did various things or interacted with others in my life and tried to remember to act out my word by blessing others.

You can join in on this free study by going and registering HERE before October 15th. I absolutely love this study and I highly recommend the teachings of Sarah Koontz.  She is very Biblical and her teachings are sound. Plus, she's super nice and such a sweet person!

I hope you'll join the study as you'll learn so much! It's only a 3 week study so it's perfect for all of us busy women and you'll be done before the holidays really start. It's so exciting getting to know more about Jesus and His teachings!

Bible Study Review - This I Know by Laura Dingman

ABOUT THIS STUDY:

We live in a culture of unknowns. Every day, the headlines report news of acts of terror, political upheaval, and grievous sins against others. In our personal world, we may receive unwanted news from the doctor, struggle with wayward children or worry how we’re going to pay the next bill when finances are stretched thin. We want to know the future—to know what is coming—so that somehow we can control the outcome, often leading to needless anxiety and fear.

In her second title in Moody Publishers’ Bible study line for women, Dingman, a Bible teacher and creative arts director at a large Indianapolis church, leads women through a 6-week Bible study focused on biblical truths about the trustworthy characteristics of God, helping them see how better knowing God leads to a life free from anxiety and fear and allows them to step confidently into an unknown future.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Laura Dingman spends most of her time creating and leading worship experiences that help connect people with the story of God. She has served in vocational ministry as the Creative Arts Director at The Creek, a large church in Indianapolis, for over a decade.

She loves to show people where their story intersects with God’s story. She enjoys belting Broadway, laughing hysterically, reading great books, and living life with her favorite two people in the whole world, her husband, Matt, and her spunky daughter, Abigail. She is the author of Life Rhythms: Learning to Live in God-Centered Time and I Am Found: Quitting the Game of Hide and Seek with God and Others.

Laura has developed curriculum for This I Know and is planning to teach the material at her church. The teaching sessions will be recorded and available for purchase in June 2018. You can learn more about her journey and connect with her at www.lauradingman.com.

MY REVIEW:

The thing I love about every Moody published Bible study is that I can trust it to be Biblical and beautiful.

This is a six week study and it was such a blessing to me as it addresses those horrible feelings of fear, anxiety and worry - all things I've been dealing with. I loved how she points out who God is, His promises for us and all this helped to alleviate those horrible fearful feelings.

I really liked how she pulled her own personal stories into this Bible story, too, making it feel more personal and also reassuring me that she knew how I was feeling when I get into those fearful areas of my life.

The five days of study were perfect for each week, leaving the weekend free for time with family or for making up a day if I missed one. I also love the beautiful turquoise font throughout and how they did so much to make this study beautiful for the eyes as well as for the soul.

I love this study and highly recommend it! I give it 5 out of 5 stars and hope that you'll make this your next study.

Faith Journaling and Other Things

I have started my new online Bible study, ENTRUSTED, by Beth Moore and all I can say is it's amazing! We are on day four and I'm amazed at how much I've already learned. Beth has changed her studies in that you have 5 levels of study to choose from. If you're a busy woman, you can chose level one. If you have more time to devote to study, you can choose one of the higher levels. It's a wonderful way to study without guilt!

I was watching a wonderful video by The Reset Girl on how she takes notes as she watches Bible teachers like Charles Stanley. I was so inspired! I decided to start doing the same thing and started with my note taking on Session One of my Entrusted study. Here's a picture of my notes:

I had so much fun with this and it truly did deepen my listening abilities to the teaching. As I did my notes, I would stop or even rewind to listen again for my note taking. I used Christian stickers and Illustrated Faith washi tape on this page, as well as just fun little shin stickers. I enjoyed this so much and intend on doing this for all my note taking! Like Cori (The Reset Girl), I like to listen to Charles Stanley. Some other favorite teachers of mine are John MacArthur, Tony Evans, and David Jeremiah.

Here's a link to the video if you would like to see her process for yourself.

It's finally Fall here! I'm so glad. I don't care for the heat and it's so nice to have crisp, airy nights to sleep by. I sleep so much better when it gets cooler and the air conditioning is off. Clean outside air is always more appealing to me!

I'm going to be having a small surgery next week. I had a biopsy done on a mole that has given me problems for over 40 years. When I was little, my guinea pig scratched the mole off and ever since, it's itched and looked odd. I'm so glad I finally got into my dermatologist to get this truly looked at. I'm not real concerned about this but will be glad when it's over.

I hope you're doing good, dear friends!

Psalm 5

Are you enjoying going through the Psalms with me? I hope so! I'm gaining so much insight through really studying them.  I am learning more and more about the Lord's goodness and His expectations of me as His faithful servant.

Verse 1 is so amazing. It says, "Listen to my words, Lord; consider my sighing." When I looked up the word, "sighing" in the Hebrew, it actually refers to murmurings. Have you ever had times of prayer where your heart was so heavy you just murmured? Oh, dear ones, I definitely have. When we are in a situation we don't know how to handle or it's something so difficult we're not sure what to do, the murmurings come. A lot of times I am murmuring to God His Scriptures of promise. Sometimes, it's as Romans 8:26-27 tells us,

"In the same way the Spirit also joins to help in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with unspoken groanings. And He who searches the hearts knows the Spirit’s mind- set, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God."

The Holy Spirit is praying for us because we, ourselves, just don't know what to pray. I love how God equips us to pray even when we're not sure how to even pray.

I love how verse 2 asks the Lord to pay attention and hear our cries of prayer. It's also interesting to note here that David refers to God as his King and his God. It's always good to remember that not only is the Lord our God but He is our King as well. This is a reminder to follow Him as our leader.

Verses 7 reminds me that I should always have reverence for the Lord. Notice, too, how David says, "I enter your house by the abundance of Your faithful love." Isn't it wonderful how God invites us into His house through His abundant love for us? He welcomes us to sit before Him and talk with Him. Not only that, we receive guidance from Him if we will just ask.

Verses 11 and 12 tell us over and over again how the Lord protects us and shelters us. We want to remember that He protects and shields those of us who remain faithful to Him. The word "shield" is used again, as in Psalm 3:3, to remind us that He protects us as a shield in battle. We need this reminder a lot, don't we? I know I do! In the troubles and strife of life, I can feel like the arrows are coming at me from all directions, yet God has His shield up, protecting me! Oh, Lord...thank you for this!

My spiritual heart continues to grow stronger as I go through these beautiful Scriptures. I am reminded time and time again that God cares so much for me - and for YOU!

Psalm 4

I'm sorry I didn't get my Psalms shared over the past day. I had a horrible headache and just couldn't bring myself to do much of anything. I'm feeling much better today so here we go!

Verse 1 shows the Lord's graciousness toward us. He vindicates us and frees us from afflictions. When we feel trapped on all sides, the Lord frees us. He lovingly hears our prayers.

This is such a comfort to my heart. Circumstances such as poor health or financial situations can leave us feeling trapped with the walls pressing in on us. God is able to free us from our prison and graciously does so. His love is abundant.

In verse 3, God tells us that He sets the faithful apart for Himself. Our loyalty to God is so vital and when we are faithful,He hears us when we call out to Him.

Verse 4 tells us to not sin, reflect in our hearts and be still. This is another reminder to meditate on God's Word and apply it to our heart in quiet reflection.

Verse 8 reminds us once again that with God, we are secure and can have peace. It is only through the Lord that we can have true peace and security in our heart.

I love how the Lord reminds us to live faithfully for Him and reveals how much He will and does care for us when we do. He frees our hearts from the turmoil that rages inside of it. He brings us loving peace and I am so grateful!

Psalm 3

I love Psalm 3! It has one of the most beautiful and comforting verses in the Bible, as far as I'm concerned. Verse 3 says, "But You, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, and the One who lifts up my head." Does this touch your Spirit as much as it does mine?

The word, "shield", reminds us that God protects us. The shield is what protects in battle and God is reminding us here that He protects us when we're under attack. This doesn't mean the attack has to be from other people (although it may); it can be health issues, money issues, or relationship issues. When we are under attack the Lord protects us.

Then He tells us that He is the one who lifts our head. Have you ever been so down or so distressed by life that the action of lifting your head is too much? Have you ever felt ashamed of something you've done and felt you couldn't lift your head? God understands and He doesn't want us living with our heads down. I can just imagine Him putting his mighty hand under my chin and forcing me to look into His eyes where there is hope and love. That's what He wants us to remember: With God there is hope and love. We don't have to live with our heads down. The beauty of this just overwhelms me. God loves us so much!

Verses 4 and 5 remind us that with God we are secure. I'm sure, like me, you've had those nights where the worries off life keep you up. You just want to sleep but your mind keeps turning over and over and you feel insecure. David is telling us here that he was able to sleep because he felt secure. He had Saul after him, trying to kill him, yet his faith in God was so strong, he was able to lie down and rest. Why? Because he felt secure. There is nothing like the security of God to give us peace. When we have those sleepless nights, we need to remember that God is in control and that we can sleep securely.

Finally, in verse 8, we are reminded that God is our salvation and the giver of blessings. We can trust Yahweh to save and bless us if we will just put our trust in Him. How beautiful is it that God not only saves us but pours out His blessings on us, too?

This chapter was such a blessing to me and I hope it is to you, too. There are so many reminders of how much God loves us and cares for us. He always wants to remind us of His love and care. Who am I that God would care so much? Such a beautiful chapter!

Psalm 2

Psalm 2 is full of reminders that God is in control. I love verses 4-6 where he reminds us that He chooses who the King (or President) is and then laughs when we are arrogant enough to think that we know best. Everything in God's world is to one end and that is for Jesus to return to rule and reign. We can look around our own country and see that God orchestrates who He wants in office despite what we may want. This Scripture reminds me to have peace and remember that God is in control and is working everything to the glorious return of Christ.

Verse 11 reminds us to serve the Lord with reverence and awe. Sometimes I have the unfortunate ability to try and bring God down to my own level. Do you ever find yourself doing this? I highlighted this Scripture to remind myself that God is to be feared and that He is God and I am not. He is way, way above me in all ways and I want to always be reverent of Him!

Finally, in verse 12, we are reminded again, as we were in Psalm 1, that those who take refuge in Him are happy. God brings us true joy that nothing else can give us!

**+**+**+**+**+**+**+**+**+**+**+**+**+**

I hope you're enjoying going through the Psalms with me. I am gaining so much from just meditating on each chapter slowly. Letting it sink into my heart and mind. It is truly a blessing to my soul!

Psalm 1

I'm going through the Psalms right now and thought I would share what I'm learning here.

I have a highlighting system I use but I'm still fine-tuning it. That's why I have the different highlighter colors. Right now I'm using this system:

Purple - God, Jesus, Holy Spirit
Green - Geographical
Blue - People
Yellow - Instruction or commands
Pink - Women
Orange - satan, evil forces

I'm sure I'll get it exactly as I want it but this makes sense to me so I'm using it! lol

Psalm 1 tells us that "happy is the man who does not follow the advice of the wicked". As I studied this I found that true joy is only found in the Lord. We find this joy by knowing God and His Scriptures and that's why in verse 3, he tells us we should be meditating on it day and night.

How many times have you heard of people in dire situations that are able to withstand their circumstances because they can recall Scriptures that encourage them? I know for myself, as I was going through test after test when I had cancer and also when I went through my other health issues, I would think of Scriptures that helped me and gave me strength. How glad I was that I knew Scriptures by heart!

Finally in verse 6, God reminds us that He watches over His people. How comforting this is! He watches over our way and guides us when we follow Him. This encourages me to follow God and make Him a priority in my life. God is so good to be with us!

I love the Psalms. They have absolutely so much in them about all aspects of life. They are some of the most comforting, yet convicting, Scriptures of the Bible, in my opinion. I'm so excited to share them with you. I would love to know how the Psalms have helped you and give you strength and comfort when you needed it.

Counting Our Blessings - LinkUp!

First, let me apologize for missing last week's linkup. I have been so tired, I couldn't even muster up the energy to write the linkup. I appreciate so much all of you that participate and feel so bad when I miss a week. Hopefully, it won't happen very often.

I haven't recovered, it seems, from all the activity surrounding my son's graduation. I am having a hard time admitting that I'm still recovering from the "horrible year", as I refer to it. There are days when all I do is read, watch tv, and sleep. Not exactly living an exciting life, am I? lol Things will get better and that's what counting our blessings is all about.

57. I'm loving the Bible study I told you about. Here is the S.O.A.P. page I did

and here are two of the coloring pages I did

I really like that this study is good yet not too intense for me right now. Such a blessing to find this.

58. The girls got groomed last week and they are so beautiful. I can't tell you what a blessing these two are - especially when you're not feeling your best. They love to give sweet cuddles and they never hesitate to take a nap. Here's Miss Cookie

and here's Miss Mitzi

They bless me so much! Plus, aren't they adorable?

What are your blessings? Please share on the linkup or in the comments!

Preparing To Move Mountains

Are you in a situation where you wonder if God can use you? Do you feel so tired - sleep so much - that you question where you really can be used in God's kingdom? I do. My body is still recovering and I am still in many situations that affect my day to day life. I don't have the energy I used to have or the stamina. I have to take a nap most days and, believe me, this doesn't make me feel like I'm doing much for my family and myself, let alone God. But guess what? This is not our truth! Everything is exactly how God had it planned and He is preparing us for great things.

The rest I find myself craving right now is healing my body and mind. It's allowing me to spend time listening to teachings and reading/listening to God's Word. I have never been able to listen or study the Bible this intensely before. I never had time! I was busy raising and schooling my children or busy working or volunteering at my church. I studied as much as I could but never could devote as much time as I would have liked. It was a real desire for me to be able to do this. I can do it now - it's just not the way I had envisioned it! lol God knows me, though. I don't know that I would have slowed down enough to really study the Word the way I do now. I do it because I want to, of course, but also because my body won't allow me to do much more of anything that is strenuous.

I get frustrated some days because I can't even do my studies. My mind won't comprehend what I'm reading or I'm even too tired to pick up the pen for my study. That's where the audio teachings I listen to are so invaluable. I have one of these speakers...

it's a Klipsch portable bluetooth speaker that I hook up to my iPhone and listen to Christian teachings and/or music. It's a powerful little thing that makes listening so much easier and nicer. I have several Apps that are my favorite and I will be doing a post about these Apps very soon. I listen during the day and, when I can't sleep, I turn on a teaching and it helps me to focus on God and not my pain or the fact that I can't sleep. This is such a wonderful thing about todays technology!

So, I am trying to relax, allow myself this time to sleep. I am focusing on the positive things - the progress I've seen in myself - because I know that God is using all this. The things I've been through and all the things I'm learning now are going to help me to move mountains for the kingdom of God. It's the same for you, dear friend. Remember what the Lord tells us in 2 Corinthians 1:4 -

"He comforts us in all our affliction,
so that we may be able to comfort those
who are in any kind of affliction,
through the comfort we ourselves receive from God."

Be patient and gentle with yourself, my friend, and know that we will be moving those mountains in God's good timing!!

MY REVIEW:

Holley Gerth's writing first came to my attention when I was going through all my health issues and surgeries. She is an amazing writer and woman of God who conveys on the printed page things from God's Word that bless and comfort like no other. This Bible study does the same.

This Bible study is to be used with her book, "You're Already Amazing", however, it is not absolutely necessary. This study has everything you need in it. Having said this, though, I do highly recommend that you have both the book and the DVD that goes with this study. I found it to just give me even more in-depth understanding and help.

I really loved this study because she shows us how God makes us uniquely us! He gives each of us talents and skills that He wants us to use for His glory. We don't have to be like someone else because it's not what God wants from us.

My favorite chapter (session) was 4 because it's here that she talks about relationships with others. She has a chart of safe behavior/unsafe behavior that I found extremely helpful because that's an area that I struggle with. Finding people who are true friends and not who I want them to be. Of course, the whole book is like this. Charts to help us figure out who we are, how to figure out what God wants us to do and more. It's just an amazing book from start to finish!

It would be an absolutely wonderful book to do in a Women's Bible study or as a small group study. I think it really speaks to the woman's heart who never feels like she is enough just as she is. This book dispels that destructive behavior and you will feel so much peace and comfort in who God made you.

I highly, highly recommend this Bible study! It was one of the best I've done and I intend to go through and complete it again. It's just that good.
