Book Review - Full: Food, Jesus, and the Battle for Satisfaction

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Full isn’t a diet book and it’s not a healthy eating plan. Because at the core, our problem is not really what we eat. It’s why we seek fullness in something that will never satisfy. In Full, Asheritah exhorts women to get real about their food problem, exploring the lies women often tell themselves about food, and encouraging readers to replace those lies with God’s truth. She then leads readers through how they can awaken a desire for God, helps women discover their food triggers, discusses why it’s important to celebrate food (food is not the enemy!), and shares how we can live freely when we fill ourselves with God, rather than food. She includes an assessment at the end to help readers determine if they may have a food fixation.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Asheritah Ciuciu is a writer, speaker, and recovered food addict. She grew up as a missionary kid in Romania and witnessed God change the lives of drunkards, gamblers, and swindlers, forever marking her with the power of the gospel. For years she struggled with food addiction, though she didn’t recognize or understand the markers of her behavior as those of an addict until she ate almost an entire birthday cake in one sitting. Challenged to confront the lies in her life with truth, she began unraveling her eating habits and discovered a direct correlation between her lack of hunger for God and her uncontrollable appetite for food. Over the course of a year, she chronicled her experiences on her blog and helped women find comfort from God’s presence, not food. Her new book, Full: Food, Jesus, and the Battle for Satisfaction, releases from Moody in January 2017. Her passion is helping women find joy in Jesus through a deeper walk with God, sharing vulnerably from her own life experiences as well as applying Scripture to daily life. She’s married to Flaviu, her high school sweetheart, and together they raise their spunky children in northeast Ohio.

MY REVIEW:

I was so excited to be able to read this book regarding food addiction. Like so many people, I struggle with this on a daily basis, however, I have never been able to control it on my own. Knowing that I can have a healthy relationship, through my relationship with Christ, sounded absolutely wonderful. I had high expectations for this book and I was not disappointed!

First of all, this book is not written by a nutritionist that has never struggled or someone speaking from high above. This book is written by someone who has been there and done that. She has been on both spectrums of food addiction - eating way too much and then not eating enough. She has tried diets and other deprivation tactics, only to be thwarted like so many of us.

You really feel like Asheritah is a good friend who truly wants you to succeed by encouraging you to surrender yourself to God and to make your relationship with him stronger. One of my very favorite parts of this book is the "Ten Lies about Food" section. She shares what the lie is and then gives you Scripture, personalized to you, to help you gain strength, through the Holy Spirit. You are to fill up on Scriptural truth rather than food. Then she has a section called, "Grow Up in Mature Faith" and I found this especially helpful in figuring out why food has become such a crutch and a addiction in my life.

This book gives you the tools to have mastery over your food and what it really means in your life. I absolutely love this book and it is one of the most helpful books I've ever read on food addiction. I have been applying so many of these tools to my life and already see a change in how I feel about food. I intend to re-read this book and more intensely and make God the center of my life instead of food. I highly recommend this book to anyone who doesn't have a healthy relationship with food but would like to. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.
